ASEAN MATARIKI
CELEBRATING THROUGH CULTURE
The Full Story
From July 16-22, 2023, the vibrant cultures of Māori and Thai communities came together in a unique and impactful celebration through the Matariki 2023 Programme in Thailand. This event was more than just a gathering; it was a heartfelt exchange of traditions, stories, and artistry, reflecting the deep connections forged between the two cultures.
The journey began in October 2022, led by Nikora Ngaropo and Maya Thong-Oui. Their commitment saw multiple trips between
New Zealand and Thailand, engaging with key stakeholders to rally support for this cultural exchange.
Their efforts culminated in a series of enriching events, each showcasing the beauty and depth of Māori and Thai traditions.
Highlights included the creation of a traditional Māori space at the Movenpick BDMS Hotel, a cultural exchange at Thai Song Dam village featuring traditional arts, crafts, and dances, and the Young Animators Workshop at C Asean, where 30 young participants explored animation techniques. The grand finale at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre showcased Māori performances, carving demonstrations, and a fashion show, leaving a lasting impact and fostering future collaborations.
